Historic Day for Curling in Northern Ontario

June 5, 2007 – An amalgamation agreement and new constitution were officially signed in Sault Ste. Marie on June 2, 2007 to form one strong body for curling in Northern Ontario. The Northern Ontario Curling Association (NOCA) is the sport's new governing body for the area stretching from the Manitoba border to Moose Factory to Mattawa.

In the past, four associations promoted and supported curling in Northern Ontario. The Northwestern Ontario Curling Association, Northern Ontario Ladies Curling Association, the former Northern Ontario Curling Association and Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Curling Association amalgamated effective May 1, 2007.

NOCA's Board of Directors is made up of Regional Directors elected by member curling clubs in each region. The Board selected Al Gemmell of Algoma Mills as President, Muriel Anderson from Sioux Lookout as Vice-President and Debbie Grillanda of Azilda as Secretary-Treasurer. Board members are:

Region 1: Muriel Anderson (Sioux Lookout); Rob Sinclair (Fort Frances) Region 2: Paul Burke (Thunder Bay); Bev Junnila (Thunder Bay) Region 3: Ken House (Geraldton); Sharron Lennie (Manitouwadge) Region 4: Al Gemmell (Algoma Mills); Maymar Gemmell (Algoma Mills) Region 5: Alan Arkilander (Sudbury); Debbie Grillanda (Azilda) Region 6: Steve Chenier (New Liskeard); Bob Hardy (Iroquois Falls)

"This is a landmark day for curling in Northern Ontario," said President Al Gemmell. "The Northern Ontario Curling Association will work hard for all curlers and clubs in the North. Development is a major focus and we will be providing training for coaches, instructors, ice technicians, club managers and volunteers. We also aim to increase opportunities to play at the competitive level."

NOCA is pleased to announce that Leslie Kerr of Atikokan has been hired as Executive Director. A logo for the new Association was also unveiled on June 2.
