Soo Indians prepping for '06-07 NOJHL season The pieces are starting to fall into place for the new Soo Indians. The former Northern Michigan Black Bears' franchise not only has a different look with the "old but new" nickname that is so familiar to Twin Soo hockey fans but has a new owner and new hockey staff. Charlie Perdicaro is now the owner of the Indians, who like their Black Bear predecessors, will compete in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League. Perdicaro, a New York land developer, has a hockey staff in place that has strong ties to the Twin Soos. Coach/general manager Jim Capy, a veteran of six NOJHL seasons with both the Soo Thunderbirds and Blind River Beavers, previously coached AAA midget hockey in Soo, Michigan for eight years. And associate coach Don Gagnon has spent considerable coaching time with both the AAA midget Soo North Stars and AAA midget Soo Indians. Capy and Gagnon have announced that the Indians will hold a tryout camp beginning on Aug. 9 at Big Bear Arena. Area players wanting to register for the tryout camp, can visit sooindianshockey.com and complete the registration form. With the hockey department at work, the Indians have named Angela Roy as director of corporate sponsorship. Roy will also oversee the Indians' season ticket drive and has announced that season tickets for the 24 home games of the '06-07 season can be purchased for $100 by visiting her at the Big Bear Arena Pro Shop or by calling her at 906-635-4906. Also, the Indians are looking for alumni and fans to enter teams for the Carmen Provenzano Memorial Cup Golf Tournament, to be held on Saturday July 29 at Maplewood Golf Course in Soo, Ontario. The tournament is set up as a fundraiser for the Indians. For more information and/or to register, call Capy at 705-942-6617.
