Greyhounds drop a shootout in Plymouth

The Soo Greyhounds couldn't find the guns in a shootout and managed to only sneak away with a point from the Plymouth Whalers.

On Sunday afternoon in their final road contest of the regular season, the Greyhounds dropped a 4-3 decision to the Whalers and returned home with three of a possible six points from the three-game road swing.

Dropping the extra point in a shootout did eliminate the Hounds' chances of finishing as high as sixth place in the Ontario Hockey League's western conference.

The Hounds could still catch the seventh place Windsor Spitfires but the locals find themselves two points behind with the Spits holding a game in hand.

In Plymouth, where the teams skated to a 1-1 tie after one period and 3-3 draw after two, Cody Thornton scored two goals for the Hounds, including one on the power play, to give him 25 tallies on the season. Jacob Lalonde add the other Greyhound goal.

Jared Boll replied with two goals for the Whalers while James Neal added the other.

In the shootout, Chris Terry's goal on Plymouth's first attempt was all that the Whalers would need to claim the overtime win. Thornton, Ryan Kitchen and Scott Restoule were all denied on attempts by Whalers goaltender Justin Peters.

Kyle Gajewski stopped 39 of 42 Plymouth shots in goal for the loss while Dustin Jeffrey set up a pair of goals for the Hounds. The Greyhounds fired 29 shots on goal.

The Greyhounds will conclude the regular season with a pair of games at Memorial Gardens.

On Friday, the Saginaw Spirit visit for a 7:30 p.m. start while the Sarnia Sting will mark the last regular season game ever at the Gardens at 7 p.m.
