Dragon Cup - Soccer Tournament (Michigan) - Sault United Football (Soccer) Academy (SUFA)

The SUFA U9 soccer team recently returned from the "Dragon Cup" soccer tournament in Lake Orion, Michigan.

This was the first officially sanctioned tournament for the Academy team and the result was outstanding.

The team ended with a record of 3-1, finishing in a three way tie for first place.

The Soccer Academy has recently joined up with the Alliance Academy of Michigan, one of the pre-eminent soccer programs in the state.

SUFA is now entering teams in multiple age groups.

The co-ed team (2 girls) completed in the Boys U9 division and won their first three teams against some stiff competition, before losing in the final game.

Coach Aniela Pulice commented that they would have fared better in the last game, but the team played without any subs the entire tournament and ran out of legs for the last game.

At this age group, there were no playoffs, preferring to emphasize fair play over winning at this age level.

"We were hoping that they would be close games, but were overjoyed that they won three in a row against some experienced and well coached teams," said Academy Director, Bill Howe.

This shows that our program is on track.

We emphasize skill development over league games and it is proving to be a winning formula.

Earlier this year the team finished with a 3-0 record at the 3 on 3 tournament in Grand Rapids, winning their semi-final and only losing on penalty shots in the final.

Ironically, they played the team they lost to in the final at the first game of the Dragon Cup but beat them this time around.

SUFA is very proud of the kids and coaches hard work and sportsmanship.

One of the players (Elijah Beaton) has been invited to take part in training with their select program and attend top level tournaments in the U.S..

SUFA begins indoor training on October 18 at the NCC.

Interested parents can check out the program at:www.saultunitedfc.net or contact the Director at [email protected].

We offer training and games for all kids ages 3-17.

SUFA also has a Futsal program (5-a-side gym soccer) that they can check out.
