Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan's Pullar Community Building renovation project received a major boost in mid-July when city officials received a check for $40,000 from Kraft Foods.

As a result of the Hockeyville contest held this spring, Sault Ste. Marie’s historic ice arena received the cash prize for its impressive third place finish in the overall national competition.

Thanks to an essay written by Sault Ste. Marie native Ron Maleport and the dedication of a passionate voting public, the Pullar will receive major upgrades using the Kraft donation.

“It was an exciting contest and I know we are all very proud of the community because it is through public support that we brought home a $40,000 prize for an important facility in our community,” said Linda Hoath, executive director of the Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“The Pullar is home to many groups and individuals and their involvement in the process has certainly enriched the entire community,” said Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Anthony Bosbous. “We would like to thank the people who took the time to cast their votes for the Pullar. It is a tremendous accomplishment for our small but passionate community, the Original Hockeytown USA, to have made it to the top two in the East in the competition! The money will go a long way in working to preserve the Pullar experience.”

The Pullar has already undergone major renovations in recent years and continues to be a beloved gem in Sault Ste. Marie.

Proof that there is a silver lining in all things, the fact that the Pullar didn’t win the grand prize means it is eligible to compete in the contest again next year.

“Remember, our ability to participate begins with a well-written essay. It’s not too early to think about what you would say about the Pullar for next year’s contest,” reminded Hoath.

Those interested in a submission should watch the I Love Sault Ste. Marie Facebook page for the announcement when Kraft launches the call for entries for the next Hockeyville contest.
