Having more time to prepare was part of the reason for Sault Ste. Marie’s opportunity to host the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge being delayed by a year.

On Wednesday, Hockey Canada announced that Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, BC will host the 2015 event while Sault Ste. Marie will play host to the event in 2016.

In an email, Ian McMillan, executive director of Tourism Sault Ste. Marie said that a joint decision was made involving Hockey Canada and the city of Sault Ste. Marie that waiting a year would give the organizing committee an opportunity to get “better established.”

The event is scheduled to open on Oct. 28, 2016.

In May, Sault Ste. Marie city council approved a decision to provide $25,000 toward the cost of hosting the event.

McMillan said that money was earmarked for the event and will carry forward.
