Thunderbirds heading to nationals

The Soo Thunderbirds are heading back to the RBC Cup. Thanks to a 3-2 win over the Fort Frances Lakers of the Superior International League, the Thunderbirds will return to the RBC Cup for the first time since 2012.

Thanks to a 3-2 win over the Fort Frances Lakers of the Superior International League, the Thunderbirds will return to the RBC Cup for the first time since 2012.

Matt Pinder scored at 4:05 of the third period to give the Thunderbirds their third lead of the game, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night.

Nicolas Tassone had the other two goals for the Thunderbirds while Joey Miller picked up two assists.

Goaltender Mario Culina made 29 saves.

Wyatt Cota had a goal and an assist for Fort Frances, who entered the tournament as the host and SIJHL champions. Nick Minerva also scored while goaltender Pierce Dushenko stopped 41 shots for the Lakers.

The RBC Cup, hosted by the Portage Terriers, is scheduled to begin on May 9.
