On the road for the first time in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League final, the Soo Thunderbirds grabbed their first series lead.
With a 4-2 victory on Thursday night, the Thunderbirds now lead the Cochrane Crunch two games to one in the league championship series.
Goaltender Mario Culina made 30 saves for the Thunderbirds while Matt Pinder led the offensive attack with a pair of goals.
Nicolas Tassone added a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds. Boris Katchouk also had a multi-point night with a pair of assists. Owen Headrick also scored.
Cody Gratton and Daniel Stagg scored for Cochrane. Goaltender Brett Young made 36 saves.
The Thunderbirds will look to take a stranglehold on the series in game four on Friday night, also in Cochrane.
Game five is Sunday night in Sault Ste. Marie.
