Former Soo Greyhounds netminder Matt Murray has been named the American Hockey League rookie of the year.

Former Soo Greyhounds netminder Matt Murray has been named the American Hockey League rookie of the year.

Playing his first full season with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and earned the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the league’s top rookie.

The award is voted on by AHL’s coaches players and media in each AHL city.

Murray posted a 25-9-3 record in 39 appearances with the Penguins as a 20-year-old. He lead the AHL with a 1.51 goals against average and a 0.943 save percentage and 12 shutouts, which is the best in AHL history for a rookie goaltender.

Murray was a third-round pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Thanks to a shutout streak of just over 304 minutes, Murray set an AHL record for the longest shutout streak in league history. The streak began on Feb. 8 and lasted until Mar. 8.
