Last week saw the close to another successful season of Sault College Cougar Athletics as a crowd of over 200 people celebrated the year at the Ballroom of the Comfort Suites and Conference Centre. 

The night featured team and individual awards for the 10 sports that compete under the athletics umbrella and included recognition of the 13 OCAA All Academic Award members, six OCAA All-Stars, two OCAA All-Rookie Team members, one CCAA All-Star, three OCAA team medals, and two provincial championships; as well as numerous individual team awards.  

The night culminated in the athletes of the year with Aislyn Ireton (Perth / Public Relations) winning the Female Athlete of the Year for her exploits in cross country and curling. 

Aislyn is a member of the nationally ranked women’s cross country team and OCAA first team all-star and gold medalist in mixed curling. 

Aislyn is the most decorated student-athlete in the college’s history earning OCAA all-stars in both cross country and curling to go along with 4 OCAA medals in her career (1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze).

On the men’s side Chris Glibota (Sault Ste. Marie / General Arts) took home the Ross Bachert Male Athlete of the Year as he skipped the Men’s Curling team to a repeat OCAA Championship and guided the Cougars to their fourth consecutive appearance at CCAA Curling Nationals. 

Chris finishes his career at the college with 3 OCAA total medals (2 gold, 1 bronze) as well as a CCAA bronze medal from 2014.

Golf – Jesse Hiddleston (Sault / Practical Nursing)

Cheerleading – Danyelle Thibodeau (Sault)

Women’s Hockey – Melanie Genier (Cochrane / Security)

Men’s Hockey – Brandon QuoVadis (Barrie / Aviation)
