OHL Playoff Notebook: Sault native leads Battalion to win

While the Soo Greyhounds and Saginaw Spirit enjoy two days off before game three of their Ontario Hockey League playoff series, five games were on the schedule on Sunday.

In North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie native Mike Amadio scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, while assisting on another goal as the North Bay Battalion beat the Kingston Frontenacs 3-2.

With the win, North Bay takes a 2-0 series lead as it shifts to Kingston for games three and four on Tuesday and Thursday.

Brenden Miller had a goal and an assist for North Bay while Nick Paul picked up two assists. Battalion goaltender Jake Smith stopped 25 shots.

Lawson Crouse had a goal and an assist for Kingston while Evan McEneny also scored. Sam Bennett assisted on both Kingston goals.

In London, rookie goaltender Tyler Parsons stopped 41 shots as the London Knights beat the Kitchener Rangers 6-2.

Mitchell Marner paced the Knights offensively with three goals and an assists while Max Domi had a goal and two assists. Josh Sterk chipped in with a goal and an assist while Julius Bergman also scored for the Knights, who take a 2-0 series lead.

Connor Bunnaman and Mike Davies scored for Kitchener.

The series shifts to Kitchener for game three on Tuesday night and game four on Thursday.

In Sarnia, Connor McDavid’s goal at 9:23 of the third period was the game winner as the Erie Otters beat the Sarnia Sting 6-5 to take a 2-1 lead in their first round playoff series.

McDavid had a goal and an assist while Jake Marchment paced the Otters with three goals. Dylan Strome added a pair of goals for Erie.

Stephen Pierog, Pavel Zacha, Hayden Hodgson, Alexandre Renaud and Troy Lajuenesse scored for Sarnia. Jeff King, Jordan Kyrou and Nikita Korostelev assisted on two goals each for Sarnia.

Game four is Tuesday night in Sarnia.

In Guelph, Chris Marchese scored at 2:47 of the first overtime period to lift the Guelph Storm to a 5-4 victory over the Owen Sound Attack.

Tyler Bertuzzi scored three goals for the Storm while Jason Dickinson had the other Guelph goal.

Daniel Milne had a goal and three assists for Owen Sound. Santino Centorame, Kyle Platzer and Chris Bigras also scored for Owen Sound.

The series, which is tied at one through two games, shifts to Owen Sound for game three on Tuesday and game four on Wednesday.

Sunday’s final game saw the Oshawa Generals hold on for a 2-1 victory to take a 2-0 series lead against the Peterborough Petes.

Michael McCarron’s goal at 8:49 of the third period was the game winner while Bradley Latour also scored for the Generals.

Peterborough goaltender Matthew Mancina made 39 saves while Matthew Timms had the lone goal for the Petes, who will look to pick up their first victory of the series on home ice. Games three and four are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday nights in Peterborough.

A pair of series return to action on Monday night.

In St. Catharines, the Niagara IceDogs host the Ottawa 67’s in game three of their Eastern Conference series with the 67’s holding a 2-0 edge after outscoring the IceDogs 16-7 in the first two games of the series.

Monday’s other game sees the Barrie Colts host the Belleville Bulls with a 1-0 series lead after winning the opener on Mar. 26.
