Thunderbirds winning streak snapped

A five game winning streak came to an abrupt end on Wednesday night for the Soo Thunderbirds in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action. On the road, the Thunderbirds were shut out by the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves 3-0 Wednesday.

On the road, the Thunderbirds were shut out by the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves 3-0 Wednesday.

Sudbury goaltender Kevin Labelle made 34 saves for the shutout.

Matt Neault paced the Nickel Barons with a pair of goals. Jacob Bonin also scored for Sudbury.

Brian Kment stopped 22 shots for the Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds take their 37-7-1-5 record into a home game on Friday night against the Elliot Lake Wildcats.

Meanwhile, the Great North Midget League’s Soo Thunderbirds have advanced to the league final thanks to a 3-2 double overtime victory over the North Bay Trappers on Tuesday night.

The win on home ice came after the Trappers won a pair of games in North Bay over the weekend to force the fifth and deciding game of the series.

Zach Senecal had the overtime winner for the Thunderbirds. Matt MacKay and Brendan Gillis also scored.

The team now advances to the GNML final where they will face the league’s top regular season team in the New Liskeard Cubs. The series opens on Friday night in New Liskeard.
