NOSSA hockey champs crowned

It was a strong weekend for local teams in Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) hockey action this week.

In Sault Ste. Marie, both local representatives made their way to the final with St. Mary’s blanking CASS 4-0 in the final.

Jason Uhl scored a pair of goals for St. Mary’s while Mike Fabbro and Dallas Jollineau also scored to lead the Knights to the title. Daniel Cicchini assisted on two goals for St. Mary’s.

With the win, St. Mary’s advances to the double-A OFSSA tournament next week in Pembroke.

In the tournament opener on Monday, Bryce Campbell’s second goal of the game with 1:04 remaining in the third period lifted the CASS Huskies to a 3-3 tie with College Notre-Dame of Sudbury. Both of Campbell’s goals came in the final period while Alex Hansen added a goal and an assist for the Huskies.

Jeremie Noel, Alexandre Savard and Alain Picard scored for College Notre-Dame.

The other morning game on Monday saw St. Mary’s beat North Bay’s Scollard Hall 11-0. Bradley Caruso got the shutout while Uhl scored three times for the Knights. Mike Fabbro also scored three times for St. Mary’s while Nicholas Brunetta had two goals and two assists. Mitchel Robinson. Erik Paradis and Jake Lewis also scored for St. Mary’s.

The third game of the day on Monday between College Notre-Dame and Scollard Hall had the Sudbury reps come out with a 4-2 win. Savard, Justin Trottier, Nicholas Marion and Christian Lariviere scored for College Notre-Dame.

Owen Bainbridge and Jared Mechesfke scored for Scollard Hall.

Monday’s final game saw Jollineau score three times to lead St. Mary’s to a 6-3 win over CASS. Paradis, Uhl and Austin Rowe each added a goal and an assist for the Knights.

Campbell scored all three goals for CASS.

On Tuesday morning, St. Mary’s opened the day with a 6-4 win over College Notre-Dame. Daniel Cicchini had a pair of goals and an assist while Brunetta, Jollineau, Uhl and Connor Boudreau completed the Knights scoring.

Marion and Nickolas DeSantis had two goals each for College Notre-Dame.

The final round robin game saw CASS defeat Scollard Hall 5-1. Campbell, Hansen, Dylan Cooke, Mark Khull and Greg King scored for CASS while Steven Ransom had the lone goal for Scollard Hall.

In the triple-A NOSSA tournament in North Bay, the St. Basil Saints advanced to the final before dropping a 5-4 decision to St. Charles (Sudbury) in the championship game.

Cameron Quenville scored three times for St. Charles while Andrew Dodge-Prescott and Jeff Pitawanakwat also scored.
St. Basil advanced to the final thanks to an undefeated record in the round robin that also saw them beat St. Charles earlier in the day on Tuesday by a 6-0 score. Matt Keenan has two goals and two assists for St. Basil while Dom Gervasi, Mike Trunzo, Trent Sepkowski and Jonny Hammond also scored.

On Monday, St. Basil skated to a 3-1 win over Widdifield to open the tournament. Gervasi, Josh Fisher and Mark Spadoni had the St. Basil goals.

In their second game on Monday, Keenan scored three times and Gervasi added a goal as the Saints skated to a 4-4 tie with West Ferris of North Bay. Ryan Wagner had a pair of goals for West Ferris.
