Brad Jacobs and his rink from Soo Curlers is atop the standings at the 2015 Tim Hortons Brier through three four draws.

Team Jacobs, which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden, picked up a pair of victories on Sunday to improve to 3-0 at the tournament being held in Calgary, Alta.

Jacobs opened the day with a 9-5 win over Kevin Koe’s Alberta rink in nine ends in the morning draw. Leading 6-5, Jacobs scored three in the ninth end to seal the victory.

“You know that they’re going to be playing hard for the steal in that end and we’re going to be trying to keep it open and either score one or get two,” Jacobs told reporters of the ninth end. “Even if you give up one, you’ve still got the hammer coming home. The way that it worked out, we had a relatively simple shot to get three. You need to take advantage of those opportunities every chance you get.”

Jacobs also spoke of the benefit of getting the hammer in the opening end while forcing the Koe rink into some tough shots in the win.

“We were able to force them into making some pretty tough shots,” Jacobs said. “We got some breaks and we made (the shots) we needed to make.”

In the fourth draw, a score of two in the ninth end wound up being the difference in a 7-5 win over Jim Cotter’s rink from British Columbia.

Leading 5-4, Jacobs managed to steal two in the ninth before surrendering a single in the tenth end for the victory.

“That was our second game of the day and you could tell we were all a little bit tired,” Jacobs said. “We were able to hang in there and grind it out even though things weren’t going perfectly. We got a big break in nine when Jim missed his last one to steal two.

For Team Jacobs, a pair of games are on the schedule on Monday. In draw six, Jacobs faces Jamie Koe (Northwest Territories) at 3:30 p.m. (Sault time) before facing Mark Kean in draw seven at 8:30 p.m. (Sault time).

Sunday’s evening draw had four games:

  • Jim Cotter (British Columbia) vs. Adam Casey (P.E.I.)
  • Reid Carruthers (Manitoba) vs. Jeremy Mallais (New Brunswick)
  • Steve Laycock (Saskatchewan) vs. Jamie Koe (Northwest Territories)
  • Kevin Koe (Alberta) vs. Mark Kean (Ontario)
