Three Sault teams advance in NOSSA curling

A trio of Sault Ste. Marie entries are heading to the semi-finals in Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) curling in North Bay. On the boys side, Superior Heights, skipped by Nick Servant, beat Espanola 7-2 in the opening draw.

A trio of Sault Ste. Marie entries are heading to the semi-finals in Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) curling in North Bay.

On the boys side, Superior Heights, skipped by Nick Servant, beat Espanola 7-2 in the opening draw. The Steelhawks took an early 4-0 lead and added three more in the sixth end in the win.

In their second draw match, Superior Heights took on Lockerby of Sudbury in a rematch of last years championship, dropping a 6-5 decision to the defending champs. Superior Heights was unsuccessful in an attempt to blank the seventh end before being run out of rocks in the eighth end.

The Steelhawks then beat Bruyere Secondary School in their third game of the day by an 8-3 score in six ends to earn a semi-final berth.

White Pines beat Bruyere Secondary School in their opening draw match in an extra end 7-6. Skipped by Brendan Acorn, White Pines drew against a pair of North Bay rocks in the extra end for the win.

White Pines advanced in the double elimination tournament to take on St. Charles of Sudbury in the second draw where they dropped a 7-1 decision.

The Wolverines rebounded to grab another semi-final berth as they beat Widdifield (North Bay) 8-2.

Superior Heights will face Lockerby while White Pines will face St. Charles.

On the girls side, Superior Heights, skipped by Katie Rutledge, jumped out to a winning start with a 10-7 victory over North Bay’s Algonquin in the first draw while Korah, skipped by Alicia Simbirski, also opened the tournament with a victory by beating Ecole Secondaire Catholique Jeunesse-Nord 5-4.

The Korah girls advanced to the semi-finals where they will face Widdifield after an 8-6 extra end win over Algonquin.

The Superior Heights girls will play in Wednesday’s consolation round after finishing day one with a 1-2 record.
