The Soo Thunderbirds were on the road for a pair of games over the weekend in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
The Thunderbirds traveled to Powassan for a pair of games against the Voodoos and return home having extended their lead atop the NOJHL standings thanks to a pair of wins.
On Saturday night, goaltender Brian Kment stopped 29 shots in a 5-2 Thunderbirds win. Jaren Bellini and Nicolas Tassone had a goal and an assist each for the Thunderbirds. Nic Sicoly, Boris Katchouk and Brett Jeffries also scored.
Tyler Gervais-Rolfe and Steve Harland scored for Powassan.
On Sunday the Thunderbirds surrendered just 14 shots as they completed the weekend sweep with a 6-1 win.
Tassone scored a pair of goals and set up another to pace the Thunderbirds offensively. Matt Pinder also scored a pair of goals while Katchouk had a goal and two assists. Devin Shell also scored for the Thunderbirds.
Brendan D’Agostino had the lone Powassan goal in Sunday’s loss.
The wins improve the Thunderbirds record to 35-6-1-5 while Powassan falls to 15-24-0-8.
The Thunderbirds are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Blind River to take on the Beavers.
