Strong weekends led to a pair of honours for two Soo Greyhounds early this week.

On Monday, Greyhounds forward Sergey Tolchinsky was named the Ontario Hockey League’s player of the week while Greyhounds goaltender Brandon Halverson was named the Canadian Hockey League’s goaltender of the week on Tuesday.

In being named player of the week, Tolchinsky is coming off a week that saw him score eight points in three games.

Tolchinsky opened the week with two goals and an assist as the Greyhounds beat the Sarnia Sting 5-2 at the Essar Centre on Wednesday. On Friday Tolchinsky picked up an assist as the Greyhounds beat the Saginaw Spirit 7-1 in Saginaw. The 20-year-old wrapped up the week with a goal and three assists in a 5-0 Greyhounds win in Plymouth over the Whalers.

Tolchinsky, a Carolina Hurricanes prospect, has 23 goals and 70 points in 47 games this season with the Greyhounds.

The 18-year-old Halverson started all three Greyhounds wins last week.

The New York Rangers prospect stopped 31 shots in the victory over Sarnia and 18 against Saginaw before picking up the shutout on Saturday by making 33 saves.

Including Mondays 30-save shutout over the Sarnia Sting in Sarnia on Monday, Halverson has a record of 30-4-0-2 with a 2.70 goals against average and 0.913 save percentage.

The Greyhounds now open up a stretch of five-straight games on home ice as they host the Sudbury Wolves on Wednesday evening.
