Algoma wrestler heading to nationals

It was a successful weekend for Algoma wrestling and specifically Natasha Doroodian. The second year wrestler won a silver medal in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) wrestling championships at Laurentian University in Sudbury on Saturday.

The second year wrestler won a silver medal in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) wrestling championships at Laurentian University in Sudbury on Saturday.

With the second-place finish, Doroodian advances to the CIS championships, set for Feb. 27 in Edmonton, Alta.

Doroodian finished the OUA championship with a 3-1 record which included a win over the defending OUA and CIS champion, Krystal Adair of Laurentian.

On the basketball court over the weekend, the Algoma basketball teams were swept in their final home games of the season by the University of Windsor Lancers.

The Algoma men dropped a 103-66 decision on Friday before losing 98-60 on Saturday.

Rotimi Osuntola came off the bench for Windsor to score 25 points while Mike Rocca added 18 points. Sean Clendinning and Terrell Campbell had 11 points each to lead Algoma.

On Saturday, Marko Kovac and Bradford Parker had 18 points each while Alex Campbell chipped in with 16 points for Windsor. Clandinning and Terrell Campbell had 12 points each for Algoma.

The women’s basketball team dropped a 95-23 decision on Friday before losing 74-38 on Saturday to Windsor.

Korissa Williams had 24 points for Windsor on Friday while Emily Prevost had 17 points. Alyssa Dovigi had seven points to lead all Algoma scorers on Friday night.

On Saturday Prevost led Windsor with 22 points while Caitlyn Longmuir added 15 points. Andrea Kiss and Jocelyn LaRocque chipped in with 13 points each for Windsor. Laura Meadows led all Algoma scorers on Saturday night with 19 points.

Algoma’s basketball teams wrap up regular season action on the road against McMaster University in Hamilton on Feb. 21.
