At this time in 2014, Brad Jacobs and his team from Soo Curlers was over in Russia competing for, and eventually winning, an Olympic gold medal.

Now Jacobs along with third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden are looking to get back to the Tim Horton’s Brier after missing the event last year. Team Jacobs missed last year’s qualifier due to their Olympic participation.

Team Jacobs opened the Northern Ontario playdowns in Kenora, Ont. on Wednesday, looking to get back to the Brier after winning the event in 2013.

Jacobs opened the tournament with a familiar foe, meeting Chris Glibota and his team, which also competes out of Soo Curlers.

Team Glibota features third Matt Mann, second Kyle Sherlock and lead Mark Dugas.

Jacobs opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over Glibota in eight ends in the opening draw. After the two teams each picked up points in the opening end, Jacobs broke the game open with a pair in the third and then steals in the fourth and fifth ends to go up 5-1.

In the second draw, Jacobs picked up a 7-4 win against Jeff Currie of the Fort William Curling Club in nine ends. Currie represented Northern Ontario in the 2014 Brier. Jacobs broke a 2-2 tie by scoring a pair in the fourth end  and sealing rhe win with two more in the ninth end.

Glibota dropped a 7-4 decision to Al Hackner (Fort William Curling Club) in draw two. Leading 5-4, Hackner blanked the ninth end before sealing the win by scoring a pair in the final end.

Jacobs is back in action on Thursday afternoon when he faces Mike Jakubo of the Sudbury Curling Club in draw three. Glibota faces Dylan Johnston of the Fort William Curling Club in draw three at 2 p.m. eastern time.

In draw four Jacobs faces Bryan Burgess of the Kakabeka Falls Curling Club while Glibota faces Ben Mikkelsen (Fort William Curling Club). Start time for the fourth draw is 8:30 p.m. eastern time.
