Two-goal third lifts Greyhounds to road win

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – At times it might not have been pretty, but things weren’t all bad for the Soo Greyhounds on Friday night.

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – At times it might not have been pretty, but things weren’t all bad for the Soo Greyhounds on Friday night.

The Greyhounds overcame a less-than-idea start, to pick up a 7-5 win over the Mississauga Steelheads at the Hershey Centre Friday in Ontario Hockey League action.

A pair of third-period goals lifted the Greyhounds to the victory, their seventh straight.

“We were very casual in the first period,” said Greyhounds Coach Sheldon Keefe. “I really liked our response in the second period. There was a 15-minute segment in the second period that was some of the best hockey we’ve played here in quite a while so we’re really happy with that. While it wasn’t to the same level, I thought we made some good efforts in the third period as well to find a way to win.”

Brandon Halverson got the start but was pulled following the opening period after giving up three goals on eight shots. Joseph Raaymakers would give up two goals on five shots in the second period.

“Both guys know that they want to be better,” Keefe said of the goaltending. “Joseph was in a tough position where we ask him to come in cold but I know Brandon wants to be better. Last night’s game against a top team in the league (Barrie), he was the reason we won the game. (Friday) he wasn’t at his best.”

Halverson would come back in for the third period and stop all 12 shots he faced in the final period.

“What I did like was when we put him back in (for the third period) and gave him another opportunity to come in and help us win the game and he did that,” Keefe said. “I don’t feel great about what had gone on for two periods but Halvy came in for the third and made the simple saves we needed. His puck-handling was exceptional ad because of that was a reason we didn’t spend a whole lot of time in our end. I leave the game feeling good about our goaltending despite it not being very good for the first two periods.”

Justin Bailey had two goals and two assists for the Greyhounds in the win while Jean Dupuy added a goal and an assist. Michael Bunting, Connor Boland, Nick Ritchie and Zach Senyshyn also scored for the Greyhounds. Anthony DeAngelo assisted on three Greyhounds goals. Jared McCann and Sergey Tolchinsky also had two assists each in the win.

Jimmy Lodge had two goals and an assist for the Steelheads in the loss. Jared Walsh had a goal and an assist for Mississauga. Everett Clark also scored. Sean Day and Sam Babintsev assisted on two goals each for Mississauga. Goaltender Jacob Brennan stopped 38 shots.

With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 34-9-0-2 while Mississauga drops to 18-24-2-1 with the loss.

The Greyhounds wrap up their three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon in Guelph.
