Algoma hosts Toronto in OUA basketball

Saturday wasn’t an easy day for the Algoma University men’s and women’s basketball teams in Ontario University Athletics action. Both teams dropped home games Saturday to the University of Toronto at the George Leach Centre.

Both teams dropped home games Saturday to the University of Toronto at the George Leach Centre.

In the women’s game, Emily Piccini scored 16 points to lead Toronto to an 81-32 win over Algoma. Jill Stratton added 13 points while Alanna Garner had 12 and Liane Bailey had 11 in the win.

Sydney Resch had 14 points for Algoma in the loss while Laura Meadows scored 12 points.

On the men’s side, Devin Johnson had 18 points and 12 rebounds in a 95-75 Toronto win over Algoma. Toronto’s Julian Clarke led all scorers in the game with 22 points. Manny Sahota added 14 points in the win.

Terrell Campbell led Algoma with 19 points in the loss.

Algoma shot just 34.8 percent from the field in the game compared to Toronto’s 50.8 percentage. Toronto also hit 10 three-pointers in the win while out-rebounding Algoma by a 45-26 margin.

The losses came one day after Algoma dropped games to Ryerson on Friday night.

Both Algoma teams return to OUA action on Jan. 23 when they are on the road in Thunder Bay to take on Lakehead. On Jan. 25, the teams return home to host Nipissing at the GLC.
