With new faces, Greyhounds beat Spirit (update)

For the first time in a while, the Soo Greyhounds played with much of their primary lineup.

For the first time in a while, the Soo Greyhounds played with much of their primary lineup.

All four of the Greyhounds new acquisitions and three members who competed in the recent World Junior Hockey Championships, all returned to action Friday as the Greyhounds beat the Saginaw Spirit 3-1 at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw.

“It felt very much like the first exhibition game of the season,” Greyhounds Coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We had four new faces and three guys that haven’t played for us in a month or so.

“It was a very unorganized game,” Keefe added. “We didn’t really play with any structure or any purpose. It was a game where we had to rely on our goaltender and he won us the game.”

Brandon Halverson made 33 saves.

“He looked very focused right from warmup,” Keefe said of Halverson. “He was very prepared and it showed early on in the game. We had to rely on him way more than we wanted to tonight. He was very good. It was tough to see him get scored on because he deserved the shutout tonight.”

After a scoreless opening period, the Greyhounds scored a pair of goals in the second period before the two teams traded goals in the third.

The game was the first in a Greyhounds uniform for three players – Nick Ritchie, Connor Boland and Anthony DeAngelo.

“They all have a lot to offer once they get settled in,” Keefe said of the trio.

Boland picked up an assist in the win.

“I really liked Boland’s game,” Keefe said of the overage blueliner. “He’s probably the guy I knew the least about and had seen the least. He was really sound and I was really encouraged with what I saw from him."

Michael Bunting scored a pair of goals for the Greyhounds in his first game back from a league-imposed suspension.

“He played fast and he played hard,” Keefe said. “One goal was a deflection and the other was a great pass from (Sergey) Tolchinsky. He finds ways to produce and score.”

Keigan Goetz had the other goal for the Greyhounds in the win.

Mitchell Stephens had the lone goal for Saginaw in the loss while recently-acquired goaltender Evan Cormier stopped 33 shots. Cormier was acquired this weekend in a trade with the North Bay Battalion in a deal that saw Nick Moutry dealt to North Bay.

With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 29-9-0-2 while Saginaw falls to 18-18-1-1 with the loss.

The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday night in Plymouth against the Whalers.
