Miller scores overtime winner for Greyhounds

The Soo Greyhounds opened their final weekend before the Christmas break on a good note.

The Soo Greyhounds opened their final weekend before the Christmas break on a good note.

Thanks to an overtime goal by David Miller, the Greyhounds opened up a two-game road trip with a 3-2 win over the Guelph Storm at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph on Thursday.

The Greyhounds carried the play throughout the night, outshooting the Storm 46-24 in the win but Coach Sheldon Keefe felt the shots weren’t quite indicative of the game.

“I thought we were at times really good and at times really bad,” Keefe said.

“We were missing a lot of guys and they were missing a lot of guys so both teams were shadows of themselves. We were good against their young players. (Guelph) had one line of veteran players and that line gave it to us pretty good.”

Miller scored 1:16 into the extra frame to lift the Greyhounds to the victory. Bryan Moore and Zach Senyshyn also scored for the Greyhounds in the win.

Joseph Raaymakers made 22 saves in the win.

“He was pretty good,” Keefe said of the rookie netminder. “He probably wants that second goal back. Overall, when we gave up a few shots in tight, he was very calm. A majority of shots came from their best players and were challenging shots.”

Tyler Bertuzzi and Luke Cairns scored for the Storm while goaltender Justin Nichols made 43 saves in the loss.

The Greyhounds played the game minus a number of veterans as goaltender Brandon Halverson (World Juniors - Team USA) and defencemen Tyler Ganly (injury) and Darnell Nurse (World Juniors - Team Canada) were out of the lineup. Defenceman Mac Hollowell and forwards Boris Katchouk and Jack Kopacka all saw action for the Greyhounds while Soo Thunderbirds netminder Brian Kment served as the backup for Raaymakers.

Ganly injured his hand in a fight on Sunday afternoon against Windsor. Keefe said the seriousness of the injury hasn’t been determined as of yet.

“He won’t be available (on Friday) and we expect that by the time we come back after Christmas we’ll have a better sense of what’s going on,” Keefe said.

With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 25-6-0-2 while Guelph falls to 19-11-1-1 with the loss. The Greyhounds move 17 points up on Sarnia in the OHL’s West Division while taking a four-point lead over the Erie Otters in the Western Conference.

The Greyhounds play their final game prior to the Christmas break on Friday in Kitchener against the Rangers in a 7:30 p.m. start.
