The run for a Canadian Open title, and their first Grand Slam of Curling title of the season, ended on Saturday.

Team Brad Jacobs – which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden – dropped a 7-5 decision to Brad Gushue in the quarter-final at the latest Grand Slam event in Yorkton, Sask. on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 5-4, Gushue scored three in the eighth end to win the battle of former Olympic champions.

The two teams traded deuces through the first four ends with the Jacobs rink taking the early lead by scoring a pair in the opening end.

After blanking the fifth end, Jacobs scored one in the sixth end. Gushue would then blank the seventh end to retain the hammer for the final end.

With the win, Gushue advances to the semi-final where he will face Kevin Koe of Calgary. Koe scored five in the seventh end to break a 2-2 tie with Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg) and win 7-2.

The other men’s semi-final will see Brendan Bottcher (Edmonton) face Steve Laycock (Saskatoon).

Bottcher advanced with a 6-3 upset of Mike McEwen (Winnipeg) while Laycock, who was born in Yorkton, beat Jim Cotter (Vernon/Kelowna, B.C.) 6-5 in an extra end.
