Jacobs finishes second at Canada Cup

Sault Ste. Marie’s Brad Jacobs and his team from Soo Curlers has another second-place finish to add to their resume this season.

Jacobs, along with third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden, dropped an 8-3 decision to Mike McEwen in the final of the 2014 Home Hardware Canada Cup in Camrose, Alta. on Sunday.

The Jacobs rink fell behind 2-0 in the opening end and McEwen would steal three more in the second end to build a commanding lead after Jacobs was heavy on a hit-and-roll.

“They got a deuce early and put a lot of pressure on us in the second end,” Jacobs told the media following the loss. “I had a tough one to give up one and that’s never really good either. They got the 5-0 lead and it’s pretty much game over from that point.”

“It’s frustrating and disappointing because we did everything necessary and prepared well for this game,” Jacobs also said. “We struggled with the ice. We struggled with a few tricky spots and it cost us huge on the scoreboard.”

McEwen, in speaking about Jacobs’ final shot of the second end that led to the steal of three, told reporters just how much slight differences in shots can change a game.

“They’re an amazing team and it just shows you that being off just a little bit, whether it’s a few extra feet of weight or a few inches of line can dramatically swing a game,” McEwen said. “That’s what happened to Brad on his last shot in the second end. He klunks that rock another half-inch or he has two feet less weight, he makes (the shot) and he either gets one or we steal one.”

McEwen got into Sunday’s final with a win over Glenn Howard on Saturday in the semi-final.

Just how good has McEwen’s rink from Calgary, Alta. been this season?

The Canada Cup marked the first time the McEwen rink, which includes third B.J. Neufeld, second Matt Wozniak and lead Denni Neufeld, had lost two games in a row when they dropped decisions to Howard and Jacobs in the round robin.

In seven events this season, the McEwen rink had six titles and a second-place finish.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, Val Sweeting and her Alberta-based team broke a 3-3 tie with a pair in the ninth end before stealing one in the tenth end to beat Rachel Homan (Ontario). 6-3 to win the women’s side of the tournament. Sweeting beat Heather Nedohin in the semi-final.
