Jacobs sweeps day three at Canada Cup, off to final (update)

The day began with an extra end victory over Mike McEwen and wrapped up with an 11-6 win over John Morris.

The day began with an extra end victory over Mike McEwen and wrapped up with an 11-6 win over John Morris.

With a 4-2 record, Jacobs was assured of at least a tiebreaker when round robin play concluded on Friday night at the Home Hardware Canada Cup in Camrose, Alta.

Thanks to a 6-4 win by Jim Cotter over Glenn Howard during Friday’s final round robin draw, Jacobs finished in a three-way tie for first with Howard and McEwen. Jacobs had won the head-to-head matchups with both, giving him a spot in Sunday’s tournament final while Howard and McEwen will face each other in Saturday night’s semi-final.

In a 7-5 extra-end win over McEwen, Jacobs stole a pair in the extra end for the win

“I threw it kind of ugly to be honest with you,” Jacobs told Curling.ca’s John Korobanik following the win over McEwen of the shot that set up the steal. “I threw it kind of tight. It wasn’t the best slide, but the sweepers (Ryan and E.J. Harnden) pounded it and drifted it back. It was an easy line call. Just sweep it all the way and see what happens. We were due for one of those. We’ve had a few of those all week that we’ve just barely missed.”

McEwen would be short on his draw attempt for the win.

Jacobs had an opportunity to score a pair in the previous end but would only score one to force the extra end.

Against Morris in the afternoon draw, Jacobs sealed the win with a steal of three in the final end but the game was close through much of the first six ends. It was in the seventh end that the Jacobs rink, which also includes third Ryan Fry along with the Harnden’s, scored three to break open a 4-4 tie.

“That was a much better performance by us,” Jacobs told the media after the win over Morris.

“It’s just always nice to play well,” Jacobs also said. “In the game against Morris, there were definitely still moments of frustration. It was a little bit back-and-forth until we took the three and we took control of the game at that point.”

The tournament final is scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m. EST.
