Pee Wee Minor Soo Jr. Greyhounds

The pee wee minor Dynamic Roofing Inc. Soo Jr. Greyhounds had a successful weekend in Chicago at the Bauer World Invitational hockey tournament.  The Bauer World Invitational is one of the largest AAA tournaments in the world, hosting hundreds of teams.

Friday, the Hounds started with a 9-4 win over the Orland Park Vikings from Illinois, followed by a 7-2 win over the Birmingham Rangers.  On Saturday morning, the team out-shot the Sylvania North Stars 37-14, but ran into a hot goalie, in a 2-1 loss.  Making it to the round of 16, the Hounds next opponent would be the Chicago Blues.  The Hounds started out fast and built a 5-0 lead thru 2 periods, the end result being a 5-2 win.

Having to play three games on Sunday to make it to the finals, the Hounds did just that.  It started with the Hounds giving up a quick 2-0 lead to the Grand Rapids Griffins.  The team fought back and grounded the Griffins with a 6-3 win.  Moving on to the semi-finals, the Hounds were up against a good-skating team in the Highland Park Falcons (Chicago).  In a tight affair, the Hounds were successful in a 2-0 win and on to the Championship game against River East Marauders from Manitoba. The game was a tight during the first two periods before the Marauders opened up the game with four power play goals to beat the Hounds 6-0.

The next action for the team is on November 22, when the Hounds host the North Bay Trappers at the John Rhodes arena.

Pee Wee Soo Storm Girls

After running the table in round robin action Friday and Saturday, a scoring drought in the semi-finals sent the Sault Peewee Storm Girls hockey team home early Sunday from their first tournament of the season.

The host North Bay Ice Boltz rode an early first period goal all the way to a 1-0 semi-final victory over the Storm in a rough seesaw battle that saw the teams exchange scoring chances for three periods. North Bay's goaltender thwarted the Sault's top snipers on several occasions.

"I thought the game could have gone either way. A bounce here or there and we're playing for gold later today," lamented Storm Coach Jeremy Stevenson. "But for our first tournament of the year I'm happy with the effort and how our girls stepped up. I think we've got some real warriors here and we'll be right there with the top teams."

On Friday night the Storm kicked off the North Bay Ice Boltz Blue Sky Classic with a hardfought 1-0 victory over Timmins. Sophie Jaremko potted the winner on a breakaway and Jana Caughill kicked out 24 shots to record the shutout.

Saturday afternoon the Sault squad pounded the highly-ranked Kanata Rangers 5-0 on two more goals from Jaremko and single markers from Kylie Esposito, Breanna Hodkinson and Marie-Pier Lecours. Caughill had the shutout.

Saturday night the Storm clinched the division with a 3-1 upset victory over Temiskaming Shores. Erika Beitz, Halle MacLachlan and Esposito each scored singles.

North Bay was the eventual Tournament champion.
