East/West kicks off high school hockey season

The local high school hockey league officially kicked off on Wednesday night as the league held its annual East/West game at the John Rhodes Community Centre. The West side - comprised of St. Basil, Korah and St.

The local high school hockey league officially kicked off on Wednesday night as the league held its annual East/West game at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The West side - comprised of St. Basil, Korah and St. Mary’s – beat the East – comprised of Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS), Superior Heights and White Pines – 13-5. Each school played a two-period games against another school.

St. Basil got the west on the board in the opening game with a 5-3 victory over CASS. Jonny Hammond and Jonathon Vernelli had a goal and an assist each for the Saints in the win. Trent Sepkowski, Colton Read and Mike Trunzo also scored for St. Basil.

Bryce Campbell and Mark Khull had a goal and an assist each for CASS. Clancy Neal also scored in the loss.

In game two, Noah Naccarato’s goal midway through the opening period held up as the winner as the Korah Colts beat Superior Heights 3-2. Korah opened up a 3-0 first period lead in the game before Superior Heights made the game close. Stano Sdao and Jarret Litalien also scored for Korah in the win.

Kevin Jones and Chris Sabourin scored for Superior Heights.

To finish off the night, Bradley Caruso and Matt Reid combined for the shutout as St. Mary’s blanked White Pines 5-0. Erik Paradis had two goals and an assist offensively for St. Mary’s in the win. Dallas Jollineau and Mitchel Robinson added a goal and an assist for the Knights while Connor Boudreau also scored.

The regular season schedule starts on Nov. 5 with three games, all at the John Rhodes Community Centre. At 3:30 p.m. CASS takes on St. Basil; at 6:30 p.m. White Pines faces Superior Heights; and at 8 p.m. St. Mary’s meets Korah.
