Seven straight for the Thunderbirds

The Soo Thunderbirds improved to 9-2-0-0 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action on Wednesday night. The team picked up their seventh straight win Wednesday thanks to a 6-1 road win against a short-staffed Blind River Beavers squad.

The team picked up their seventh straight win Wednesday thanks to a 6-1 road win against a short-staffed Blind River Beavers squad.

The Beavers played the game with just 14 skaters in the loss.

Despite being outshot 16-1 in the opening period, the Beavers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alex Cyrenne.

Nicolas Tassone led the way offensively for the Thunderbirds with a pair of goals in the win while Izaak Del Mastro and Jaren Bellini each chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds. Matt Caruso set up two goals.

Joey Miller and Travis Campbell also scored for the Thunderbirds, who outshot the Beavers 53-18 in the win.

Thunderbirds goaltender Mario Culina stopped 17 shots while Beavers netminder Zach Mills stopped 47 shots in the loss.

The game begins a stretch of 10 in a row on the road for the Thunderbirds. Next up is a pair of games in Mattawa against the Blackhawks on Saturday and Sunday.

In the other game on the NOJHL schedule on Wednesday night, the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners beat the Sudbury Nickel Barons 5-2. Connor Thie and Steven Babin had a goal and two assists each for the Gold Miners.
