The newest members of the Great North Midget League saw action in their first regular season games over the weekend as the Soo Thunderbirds hosted the North Bay Trappers.

The newest members of the Great North Midget League saw action in their first regular season games over the weekend as the Soo Thunderbirds hosted the North Bay Trappers.

The Thunderbirds split a two-game set against the Trappers, dropping a 6-2 decision on Saturday night at the Essar Centre before rebounding on Sunday afternoon, beating the Trappers 6-4 at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

On Sunday, Brad Thrower set up four goals for the Thunderbirds as they picked up their first GNML victory. Brendan Gillis scored three times while Gage Stephney added a pair of goals while setting up two others in the win. Ryan Mulligan had the other goal for the Thunderbirds in the win.

Jeff Jordan scored twice for North Bay in Sunday’s loss while Devyn Martel and Charlie Iseroff had a goal and two assists each in the loss.

The Thunderbirds overcame a string of penalties in the third period that saw the locals give North Bay six power plays in the final frame. The Trappers would score just once with the man-advantage in the period.

On Saturday evening, Mulligan and Matt Capisciolto scored in the Thunderbirds loss.

Jordan had a goal and four assists for North Bay on Saturday while Joe Whittet had a pair of goals in Saturday’s victory. Finn Seguin, Dawson Meechan and Conor Eastaugh also scored for the Trappers on Saturday.

The Thunderbirds are back in action on Sept. 27 when they host the Kapuskasing Flyers at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

MINOR MIDGET GREYHOUNDS SPLIT WITH SUDBURY

The Soo Greyhounds minor midget team split a pair of home games against the Sudbury Wolves over the weekend.

The Greyhounds rebounded on Sunday for a 5-1 victory after dropping a 6-1 decision on Saturday night.

On Saturday night, Shadow Rueben had the lone goal for the Greyhounds.

In Sunday’s game, Rueben, Zack Taylor, Brock Holden, Gage Stephney and Nicholas Smith scored the Greyhounds goals in the win.

ATTACK WIN IN OVERTIME

A pair of exhibition games for the Canadian International League’s Batchewana Attack opened up on Friday night at the Rankin Arena with an overtime win against the St. Charles Spirit.

Chris Skinner had the overtime winner on Friday night while Jason Uhl scored a pair of goals for the Attack in the win.

Ian Saganash scored three times for St. Charles in the loss.

At the time of writing details from Sunday’s game, a 10-3 Batchewana win on the road, were unavailable.
