In a summer that has already seen them sign four prospects, the Soo Greyhounds got some more good news on Thursday afternoon.
That’s when the team officially announced the signing of 19-year-old forward Gabe Guertler.
Guertler has a sesaon of college hockey under his belt after spending the 2013-14 season at the University of Minnesota.
“I’m really excited to be a part of the Soo program,” Guertler said in a release. “I think it’s a great opportunity for me to get better as a player.”
Guertler was drafted by the Greyhounds in the sixth round of the 2011 OHL Priority Selection by the Greyhounds. With intentions of playing college hockey, Guertler spent the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons with the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League before signing to play at Minnesota.
“Gabe is a very tenacious and skilled forward who plays the game with great speed,” Greyhounds General Manager Kyle Dubas said in a prepared statement. “He has shown throughout his time as a prospect of ours that he can make plays at high speed.”
In 24 games as a freshman at Minnesota, Guertler had two goals and five points. In 2012-13 with Fargo, the centreman had 31 goals and 51 points in 60 games.
