SOO MINOR BASEBALL PEE WEE SELECTS

*************************
The McDougall Energy SMBA Peewee Selects baseball club travelled to North Bay this past weekend for their second Northern Elite League Baseball games.

In the first game, the Sudbury Shamrocks defeated the Selects 14-2. After a scoreless first, the Shamrocks came on strong in the second inning, scoring 11 unanswered runs.

The Selects normally strong bats fell silent until the fifth inning when Kurtis Rogers hammered a long two-run homerun over the left field fence. Defensively, Max Beggs and Carter Magee combined on a ball hit to the fence with a throw to the cut-off man followed by a pinpoint throw to second, where Gavin Garson made the tag on the runner who was trying to stretch it to a double. Aaron Seccariccia chipped in with a hard hit double and struck out two in a relief inning early in the game. After the one blowout inning, it was a close game, with both teams playing well defensively.

In the second game, the Selects returned to form defeating Valley East 16-0 in a strong offensive game. Brandon Southwind led the Selects, pitching two strong shutout innings and going three-for-three at the plate, narrowly missing a home run that hit the center field fence for a double, another double and a single.  Several other players went three-for-three at the plate including Garson, Ethan Belleau, Seccaraccia, and Kurtis Rogers. Ty Showan hit a long double and pitched a strong inning with two strikeouts. Steven Fabbro had a strong defensive weekend, catching three solid shutout innings, and making several good plays defensively from his third and first base assignments.

The third game against the host North Bay team was rained out, and efforts are being made to play a makeup game against North Bay on the Friday night before the third NEL weekend series, which the Soo will host on the weekend of August 16 and 17.
