NOSSA track and field in full swing (6 photos)

The opening day of the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association track and field meet locally has concluded.

Taryn Lamorie of St. Basil won the women’s long jump at the midget level, jumping a distance of 4.86 meters. Lamorie edged out Allison Byrnes of Sudbury’s Marymount Academy, who jumped 4.80 meters.

Cameron Mihell of Korah won the women’s 80 meter hurdles at the junior level with a time of 13.42 seconds. Lo-Ellen Park (Sudbury) runner Michelle Corallo finished second, narrowly, with a time of 13.45 seconds. Caitlin Novello of St. Basil finished third.

After posting a time of 5:14.48 in her initial heat, Lydia Heimonen of Superior Heights cut over five seconds off her time to win the women’s 1500 meter race at the senior level. Heimonen beat Lockerby’s Sarah MacLean by a shade under five seconds. The Sudbury runner posted a time of 5.14.33.

In the senior women’s 100 meter hurdles, Sarah Hammond of St. Basil posted a time of 15.83 seconds to win the event by nearly two seconds over Katelyn Desgagne of Superior Heights. Desgagne finished with a time of 17.44 seconds.

Chrystal Coneybear of White Pines won the senior women’s javelin throw with a mark f 34.43 meters. Central Algoma’s Emily Good finished second with a throw of 33.96 meters.

Max Fisher of Superior Heights won the men’s 100 meter hurdles at the junior level with a time of 15.25 seconds. He beat Jeffrey Walton of Lasalle (15.42) and fellow Superior Heights competitor Gavyn McCabe (15.89).

Chris Kramer of St. Basil won the senior men’s 400 meter dash with a time of 50.82 seconds, one full second faster than Rudy Giusti of St. Benedict (Sudbury). Kramer picked up the win after posting the top time during the 400 meter heats.

Aron Mohammadi of Notre Dame won the men’s 1500 meter at the senior level. With a time of 4:14.30, Mohammadi won the event by just over a full second. Colton Lafrance of Espanola Secondary School finished second.

Dylan Robertson of Central Algoma won the senior men’s high jump with a mark of 1.80 meters.

Midget
In other events on Wednesday, Karly Hellstrom of Sudbury’s Lasalle Secondary School knocked nearly five seconds off her heat race time and won the women’s 400 meter dash. She beat Ella King of St. Joseph-Scollard Hall by nearly two seconds in the final.

On the men’s side in the 400 meter dash, Braeden Case of Manitoulin Secondary School won the event with a time of 56.76 seconds. Dawson Meechum from West Ferris finished second with a time of 58.07 seconds.

Hellstrom also won the women’s 1500 meter run with a time of 5:19.69, nearly nine seconds faster than Kara Neveau of Sault Ste. Marie’s St. Mary’s College.

Reuben Du Rand of Widdifield Secondary School in North Bay won the men’s 1500 meter run with a time of 4:27.12 Nick Keenan of Superior Heights finished second with a time of 4:34.94.

In the women’s 80 meter hurdles, Taylor Vaillancourt of Algonquin (North Bay) placed first with a time of 13.15 seconds, narrowly beating out Taylor Nadeau of Superior Heights, who finished with a time of 13.38 seconds.

Oliver Ecclestone of Lockerby won the men’s 100 meter hurdles. Ecclestone finished with a time of 15.87 seconds, holding off fellow Lockerby runner Mukenge Muray. Muray finished with a time of 16.01 seconds.

Jarod Roy of W.C. Eaket Secondary School (Blind River) won the men’s long jump with a jump of 5.63 meters.

Julia Gushue of North Bay’s West Ferris won the women’s shot put with a distance of 8.71 meters. Mackenzie Monico of St. Basil finished second (8.16 meters).

On the men’s side, Alex Paquette of Sudbury’s Notre Dame won the shot put event with a mark of 12.24 meters. Korah’s Darian Belkosky finished second (11.74 meters).

Junior
St. Joseph-Scollard Hall’s Jilleen Kilroy won the women’s 400 meter dash, shaving just shy of three seconds off her heat time, winning the final with a time of 1:01.30. Lasalle’s Kennedi Cashmore finished second with a time of 1:03.27.

With a time of 54.49 seconds, William Scott of Manitoulin Secondary School won the men’s 400 meter dash.  Ben Jacklin of W.C. Eaket finished second with a time of 55.16 seconds.

Algonquin’s Megan Cruikshank won the women’s 1500 meter at the junior level with a time of 5:07.96. West Ferris runner Erin Hansel finished second with a time of 5:14.92. Hansel shaved nearly eight seconds off her heat time.

In the men’s 1500 meter run, Brendan Costello kept a distance between himself and the field, winning by seven seconds with a time of 4:20.69. Dawson Chapron of Confederation finished second with a time of 4:27.77.

Katie Albert of Elliot Lake Secondary School won the women’s triple jump with a jump of 9.69 meters. Allie Fairbarn of West Ferris finished second with a jump of 9.62 meters.

In the men’s triple jump, Ryan Taylor of Lasalle won comfortably with a jump of 12.99 meters. Brett Jeanson of W.C. Eaket finished second with a jump of 11.80 meters.

In the women’s discus throw, Carine DiMaio of Notre Dame (Sudbury) beat out teammate Danika Falvo with a throw of 26.62 meters.

On the men’s side, Tanner Horgan of Lockerby won the discus throw, Horgan won with a mark of 39.76 meters. Tristan McGregor of Espanola High School finished second with a throw of 39.69 meters.

Senior
Laura Graham of Lasalle won the women’s 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.74.

Treena Restoule of Northern Secondary School (North Bay) won the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.55 meters. Jaime Reynolds of St. Joseph-Scollard Hall finished second with a jump of 1.50 meters.

Sarah MacLean of Lockerby won the women’s 1500 meter steeplechase with a time of 5:53.19. Erika Mihell of Superior Heights finished second with a time of 5:57.88.

Reinhardt Grobler of LoEllen Park won the men’s 110 meter hurdles event, beating Superior Heights runner Michael Bogensberger by just over .a half-second. Grobler finished with a time of 15.91 seconds.

Lo-Ellen Park’s Keegan Moore won the men’s javelin throw with a distance of 49.14 meters. Colton Rowley of Northern Secondary School was second with a distance of 47.32 meters.

Graham Hansel of West Ferris comfortably won the 200 meter steeplechase with a time of 6:03.42. Luke Groulx of W.C. Eaket was second with a time of 6:30.98.
