The Soo Thunderbirds improved 18-2-0-1 over the weekend thanks to a pair of wins on home-ice in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
On Saturday evening, the Thunderbirds picked up a 3-1 win over the Espanola Rivermen. Joel Horodziejczyk made 24 saves for the Thunderbirds in the win. Veteran forward Gavin Burbach had a goal and an assist in the win while Nicolas Tassone and Brett Jeffries also scored in the win.
Marc Terriault stopped 34 shots for the Rivermen in the loss. Brandon Janke had the lone Espanola goal.
Prior to Saturday’s game, the Thunderbirds honoured local veterans with a ceremonial faceoff.
On Friday night, the Thunderbirds picked up a narrow 2-1 win over the Sudbury Nickel Barons.
Goaltender Brian Kment made 30 saves for the Thunderbirds in Friday’s win over a shorthanded Sudbury club. Medric Mercier’s first NOJHL goal just under five minutes into the third period was the game winner while Anthony Miller also scored for the Thunderbirds.
Jimmy Roy scored the lone goal for the Nickel Barons in the loss. Goaltender Andrew Lefebvre stopped 34 shots in the loss.
The Thunderbirds now face four-straight games on the road. Next weekend, the Thunderbirds travel to Kirkland Lake, Abitibi and North Bay before wrapping up the four-game stretch in Blind River on Nov. 16.
