Missing two key veteran players from the roster, the women's team were physically outmatched by the Excalibur, who jumped to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half, and widened the deficit to 11-0 at the end of regulation time.
Trent's Emily Webb led the Excalibur with three goals, followed by Amy Vincent with two.
"The team worked well and never gave up. This showed the girls the expectations for OUA play and what we need to improve on in preparation for next season. Together, they were worked well as a team and I'm proud of their efforts," said Assistant Coach Aniela Pulice.
In the men's game, the Thunderbirds fared better, but Trent's lone marker from Patryk Ryska 28 minutes into the match proved to be the difference, as Trent downed Algoma 1-0.
Algoma's goalkeeper Nick Burnie had an excellent game, challenging the Excalibur's attack and shutting them out in the second half.
The Thunderbirds exhibited great speed in the well-matched affair but were unable to score on Excalibur keeper David Elli, despite several quality chances.
Head Coach Neil Ovey was pleased with his team's effort. "It's not about winning but about performing, competing, and playing as a team. We did all that. I am very impressed with how the team played and the efforts of each of them. After playing Trent we have a solid idea of what we need to improve to be competitive in the OUA next season."
The teams will be travelling to Hancock, Michigan this weekend to take on Finlandia University in their final games of the season. Next year they will play a full season schedule in the OUA.
