The Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team saw its first action of the season against a college opponent over the weekend as the Lakers hosted Robert Morris at Taffy Abel Arena for a pair of games.
The game came a week after the Lakers dropped an exhibition game to the US Under-18 team, also at Taffy Abel. The new member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association rebounded with a pair of wins over Robert Morris in non-conference action.
On Friday night Alex Globke had a goal and an assist as the Lakers picked up a 3-1 win to open the weekend. Kevin Murdock made 26 saves for the Lakers in the win. Matt Bruneteau and Chris Ciotti also scored for Lake State while Dan Radke and Zach Sternberg chipped in with two assists each. Cody Wydo scored the lone goal for Robert Morris while goaltender Terry Shafer stopped 32 shots.
On Saturday night, Murdock made 27 saves as the Lakers picked up another 3-1 win. Garret Clemment set up a pair of goals for the Lakers while Matt Johnson, Andrew Dommett and Kevin Czuczman scored in the win. Scott Jacklin scored the lone goal Saturday night for Robert Morris. Dalton Izyk got the start for Robert Morris and made 10 saves before making way for Shafer midway through the game. Shafer stopped 10 shots the rest of the way.
The Lakers are on the road next weekend, beginning on Friday night when they travel to Schenectady, New York to take on Union College.
In North American Hockey League action over the weekend, the Soo (Mich.) Eagles dropped a pair of road games to the Springfield Jr. Blues.
On Friday night Patrick Curry scored a pair of goals for Springfield in a 3-2 win. Jr. Blues goaltender Lekkas Stefanos stopped 37 shots while Trevor Stone had the other goal in the win. Michael Caruso and Kyle Loridon scored for the Eagles while goaltender Colin Brennan stopped 29 shots in the loss.
On Saturday, Davis Dekorte scored twice and set up another goal as the Jr. Blues completed the sweep with a 7-4 win. Nick Belger added a goal and two assists while Trevor Stone also had a pair of goals for Springfield. Logan Wendling and Oliver Takacsi-Nagy had a goal and an assist each. Springfield goaltender Sandro Aeschlimann stopped 34 shots. Derek Lodermeier had a goal and two assists to pace the Eagles offensively. Ryan Urso chipped in with a pair of helpers. Darren Brady, Jacob McDowell and Michele Marchetti also scored for the Eagles.
The Eagles are back in action next weekend as they host the Wennatchee Wild beginning Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Puck drop on Saturday is set for 7 p.m.
