The Soo Thunderbirds continue to cruise in the early parts of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League season.
The Thunderbirds picked up three wins in weekend action, finishing up on Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 win over the Abitibi Eskimos at the Essar Centre.
Gavin Burbach paced the Thunderbirds offensively against Abitibi with two goals and an assist. Anthony Miller also had two goals and an assist in the win for the Thunderbirds. Tyler Jones had the other Thunderbirds goal. Goaltender Joel Horodzeijczyk stopped 23 shots.
Marc Dube had the lone goal for the Eskimos in the loss. Goaltender Sylvain Miron stopped 31 shots.
Sunday’s game capped off a three-in-three stretch that saw the locals pick up a pair of road wins to open the weekend.
On Friday night, the Thunderbirds 6-2 win in Elliot Lake against the Bobcats. Anthony Miller scored a pair of goals in Friday’s win while Gavin Burbach added a goal and two assists for the Thunderbirds. Defencemen Daniel Pyymaki and Tyler Jones had a goal and an assist each for the Thunderbirds while Owen Headrick also scored in the win. Brian Kment stopped 27 shots. Dylan Sakatch had both goals for Elliot Lake in the loss.
On Saturday night, Horodziejczyk stopped 20 shots as the Thunderbirds blanked the Espanola Rivermen 1-0 in Espanola. Headrick scored the lone goal for the Thunderbirds in the win.
The Thunderbirds have now won seven straight games and sit in top spot in the NOJHL standings with a 12-2-0-0 record and 24 points. Kirkland Lake is in second with a 10-1-0-0 record and 20 points while holding three games in hand.
The Thunderbirds continue their homestand next weekend with three games in three nights, all at the Essar Centre. Blind River opens the weekend set on Friday night with Kirkland Lake invading the Essar Centre on Saturday and Espanola on Sunday afternoon.
A pair of Thunderbirds players were named as the NOJHL announced its three stars of the week on Monday morning. Goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk and defenceman Owen Headrick were named two of the leagues three stars.
For Horodziejczyk, it marked the second straight week he earned the honour
