The Soo Thunderbirds maintained their hold on top spot in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League standings on Sunday afternoon.
The Thunderbirds blanked the North Bay Trappers 8-0 in an afternoon matchup at the Essar Centre. With the win, the Thunderbirds improve to 9-2-0-0, good for 18 points and a two-point lead over the Espanola Rivermen in the NOJHL standings.
The Thunderbirds received goals from eight different players in the win over North Bay. In all, 12 players had at least a point in the win.
Goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk stopped all 10 shots he faced in the win.
Grant Syrette led the way for the Thunderbirds with a goal and three assists while Riley Bordin added a goal and two helpers in the win. Brandon Grandinetti, Nicholas Tassone, Joey Miller and Matthew Mitchell each chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds. Eric Hilock and Owen Headrick also scored for the Thunderbirds while Fraser Turner and Tyler Jones chipped in with two assists each.
Dustin Hummel got the start for North Bay and stopped 39 of 45 shots in the loss. Evan Cormier came in during the third period and stopped eight of 10 shots the rest of the way.
Next up for the Thunderbirds is a pair of road games, beginning on Oct. 11 in Elliot Lake. The following night, the Thunderbirds take on Espanola before returning on Sunday afternoon to face the Abitibi Eskimos.
