The Soo Thunderbirds continue to sit in a tie for top spot in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League standings with the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners after a quick road trip to Sudbury on Wednesday night.
The Thunderbirds improved their record to 7-2-0-0 on Wednesday night thanks to a 6-1 win over the Sudbury Nickel Barons. With 14 points, the Thunderbirds are back in a tie atop the standings with Kirkland Lake. The Gold Miners have a 7-1-0-0 record.
In Sudbury on Wednesday night, Grant Syrette had three goals while Joey Miller had three assists to lead the Thunderbirds offensively. Nicholas Tassone added two goals for the Thunderbirds. Eric Hilock also scored for the Thunderbirds. Defenceman David Radke chipped in with two assists.
Thunderbirds goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk stopped 27 shots.
Sudbury goaltender Michael Muzyka stopped 39 shots in the loss. Bradley Bell had the lone goal for the Nickel Barons in the loss.
The Thunderbirds are back in action on Friday night when they host the Blind River Beavers to open up a short two-game homestand. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. The homestand wraps up Sunday afternoon against the North Bay Trappers.
