After dropping a 3-0 decision to the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners on Friday night in Kirkland Lake, the Soo Thunderbirds rebounded on Saturday in Iroquois Falls.
The Thunderbirds picked up a 5-2 win over the Abitibi Eskimos Saturday night to improve to 2-1 on the young Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League season.
Veteran goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk stopped 32 shots in the win for the Thunderbirds while forward Matt Zalewski scored twice to lead the Thunderbirds offensively.
Gavin Burbach had a goal and two assists while Anthony Miller chipped in with three assists. Tyler Jones and Eric Hilock also scored for the Thunderbirds in the win.
Brady Clouthier and Jacob Kenney scored for Abitibi in the loss. Goaltender Sylvain Miron stopped 31 shots in the loss.
The Thunderbirds wrap up their three-game road trip on Sunday night in North Bay against the Trappers.
Other NOJHL action on Saturday night saw the Espanola Rivermen blank the Blind River Beavers 5-0 in Blind River.
