The Soo Thunderbirds opened their first road trip of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League season on Friday night in Kirkland Lake.
With a win on home ice over North Bay under their belt, the Thunderbirds suffered their first loss of the young NOJHL season, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Gold Miners on Friday night.
Tanner Lafrance had a pair of goals for Kirkland Lake in the win. Jeremy Picard-Fiset also scored for the Gold Miners while goaltender Marc Audet stopped 18 shots for the shutout.
Thunderbirds goaltender Joel Horodziejczyk stopped 28 shots in the loss.
The Thunderbirds return to action on Saturday night when they face the Abitibi Eskimos before wrapping up their three-game road trip on Sunday night in North Bay against the Trappers.
In other NOJHL action on Friday night, the Espanola Rivermen picked up a 4-3 win over the North Bay Trappers. Friday’s other game saw Sudbury skate to a 6-5 win over Elliot Lake. Sudbury opened the week with a 6-4 loss to Kirkland Lake on Wednesday night in Sudbury.
