The high school football season kicked off over the weekend with the annual East vs. West football game.
St. Mary’s, St. Basil and White Pines comprised the East while Superior Heights and Korah formed the West.
After opening the game with a 28-0 lead, the West held on for a 34-27 win in the annual senior division kickoff.
Superior Heights got things rolling for the West, taking a 28-0 lead over White Pines in the first matchup of the evening. Stevan Hiiemaa and Barry Smith ran the ball in for touchdowns for Superior Heights while Nathan Elgie threw a pass for a major. Mike Bogensberger ran a punt return in for a touchdown.
Superior Heights and White Pines played a pair of 25-minute halves before St. Mary’s took over for White Pines for two halves, one against Superior Heights and their second against Korah.
St. Mary’s cut the lead to 28-6 when Matthew White caught a touchdown pass from Justin Elwgren.
St. Mary’s cut further into the lead against Korah when Justin Senecal ran the ball in from 17 yards out to cut the score to 28-13. Elwgren ran the ball in from 12 yards out to make the scored 28-20 for the West.
St. Basil took over for St. Mary’s and quarterback Mitch Mazzuca scored on a 20-yard run to turn the contest into a one-point game at 28-27. Brent Villeneuve scored for Korah on a five-yard to cap off the scoring in the 34-27 West victory.
The senior football regular season opens Wednesday night at Rocky DiPietro Field when St. Mary’s faces White Pines at 7 p.m.
