Despite weather that wasn’t cooperative at times throughout the weekend, the Ontario Baseball Association Bantam ‘A’ Provincial Championships are finally in the books.
The local entry, they Elks 341 Bantam Black Sox finished the double elimination tournament with a 1-2 record.
The locals opened the tournament with a 5-4 win on Saturday morning over Guelph. The Black Sox fell behind late in the game but scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to win. Jarrod Sachro walked and added a double offensively in the win, Zach Duchesne also hit a double for the host team.
In their second game, the Black Sox fell behind 5-0 in the opening inning in a 10-3 loss to LaSalle, the eventual tournament champion.. Duchesne reached base twice in the looss with a double and a walk.
The Black Sox weekend ended on Saturday with a 16-0 loss to North Toronto in a game that saw the locals surrender seven runs in the sixth inning in the loss.
The tournament got off to a slow start thanks to heavy rain on Friday afternoon that forced organizers to delay the start of the opening game. With six games on the schedule on Friday, four were pushed back to Saturday.
After a busy day Saturday, Sunday’s schedule ran into more rain during the championship round which forced tournament organizers to move the eventual championship game to Monday morning.
In the championship, LaSalle used a five-run sixth inning to beat Peterborough 8-4 and take the tournament title with a 6-0 record. The sixth inning saw LaSalle have their first five hitters reach base, with five eventually scoring, to take the win. Nicholas Philbin reached base three times for LaSalle in the title game.
Blake Oswald had a pair of singles for Peterborough in the loss while Reagan Manley had a double and a walk.
