Thunderbirds open NOJHL playoffs

The Soo Thunderbirds opened the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs on Friday night with a 9-2 win over the Abitibi Eskimos. Gavin Burbach led the way for the Thunderbirds with a pair of goals and an assist in the win.

The Soo Thunderbirds opened the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs on Friday night with a 9-2 win over the Abitibi Eskimos.

Gavin Burbach led the way for the Thunderbirds with a pair of goals and an assist in the win. Dallas McLaughlin chipped in with a pair of goals for the Thunderbirds. Nicholas Pastorious set up a pair of goals in the win. Michael Caruso, Derek Battagin, Jeremy Solomon, Anthony Miller and Anthony Butorac also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds goaltender Steven Dombrowski stopped 22 shots in the win.

Peter Poulin-Roy and Ben Miller scored for Abitibi in the loss.

Eskimos starting goaltender Jeremy Laux stopped 18 of 23 shots in two periods of work. Jackson Winkler played the third period and stopped 10 of 14 shots.

Game two of the series is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Essar Centre.
