Gameday Preview: Greyhounds open final regular season homestand

Wednesday, March 13, 2013   by: Brad Coccimiglio

With three games remaining on their regular season schedule, all on home ice, the Soo Greyhounds have some control on where they will finish in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference standings.

The Greyhounds open up a three-game homestand on Wednesday night when they host the Plymouth Whalers and are in a battle with the Sarnia Sting for sixth in the conference.

The Greyhounds are currently two points ahead of the Sting with both teams having three games remaining on the schedule. The Sting have home games against Saginaw and Owen Sound coming up before finishing their schedule on the road at Owen Sound while the Greyhounds have home games against Plymouth, Kitchener and London coming up.

The Greyhounds catch the Whalers and Knights at points where they have already solidified the top two spots in the Western Conference and cannot move anymore in the standings. The Rangers meanwhile are in a battle with Owen Sound for third in the Western Conference though they trail the Attack by five points. An Attack win or Rangers loss this week clinches third for Owen Sound.

For the Greyhounds, the team has an outside shot at fifth in the conference but trail the Guelph Storm by five points and would need help from the Rangers and Erie Otters, along with three wins of their own, to pass the Storm.

On Wednesday night the Greyhounds will look to cap off a perfect season against the Whalers. The locals have won the previous five meetings between the two clubs, the most recent being a 6-5 win in Plymouth on Feb. 1.

Puck drop on Wednesday night is 7:07 p.m.
