Thursday, February 21, 2013   by: Brad Coccimiglio

It was the end of an era for the Algoma University varsity basketball program on Wednesday night at the George Leach Centre.

Algoma’s men’s and women’s basketball teams played their final regular season games as members of the Ontario College Athletics Association (OCAA) as they host the Sault College Cougars Wednesday.

The two games were also the final home games as OCAA members as well. The men’s team is on the road for a qualifying game at Algonquin in Ottawa this weekend while the women earned an automatic berth in the OCAA Provincial Championships at Humber College. The tournament opens on Feb. 28.

On Wednesday night, the Algoma women capped off a 16-2 regular season with a 94-31 win over Sault College. Brianna Mandolesi had 18 points for Algoma in the win. Corina Bruni added 15 points while Amanda Orr chipped in with 12 points in the win. Hailey Bomhof had nine points for Sault College.

The Algoma women will face the winner of the Niagara/Seneca qualifying game when the provincials open up on Feb. 28.

On the men’s side, Algoma picked up a 61-50 win. Mark Wortham scored 17 points for Algoma in the win. Samy Mohamed added 14 points in the win. Kojo Afari had 17 points for Sault College.

The Algoma men hit the road today for their qualifying game in Ottawa against Algonquin on Saturday. The winner will advance to the OCAA Provincial Championships.
