Gameday Preview: Greyhounds open second-last road trip of season

The Soo Greyhounds open up a tough three-game road trip on Thursday night when they travel to the RBC Centre in Sarnia to take on the Sting.

For the Greyhounds, a win over Sarnia on Thursday would put them a point ahead of their West Division rival in the Western Conference standings. The Greyhounds enter action on Thursday night with 66 points while the Sting have 67. The Greyhounds also hold a pair of games in hand on the Sting heading into the weekend action.

For both teams, the game is also an opportunity to gain two valuable points on the Guelph Storm, who currently sit fifth in the Western Conference with 69 points through 56 games played.

As far as the standings are concerned both the Greyhounds and Sting continue to peek over their shoulders as the Saginaw Spirit sit in the eighth seed with 62 points after 57 games.

The Sting will be out to avenge an 8-0 loss at the Essar Centre to the Greyhounds last Wednesday night. The two teams have already met seven times with the Greyhounds picking up four wins, including in the last two meetings and three of the last four.

Some eyes will be on two players in particular when the puck drops as the top two scorers in the league will be on the ice. Greyhounds forward Nick Cousins leads the way with 23 goals and 93 points in 56 games. Sarnia’s Charles Sarault sits second in scoring with 20 goals and 89 points in 58 games.

The Greyhounds will also have to contend with 50-goal scorer Reid Boucher of the Sting. Boucher has 51 goals as the regular season winds down while Plymouth Whalers forward Vincent Trocheck sits second with 42.

Puck drop on Thursday night is set for 7:05 p.m.

The rest of the road trip sees the Greyhounds travel to London to take on the Knights on Friday night before wrapping up the trip on Sunday afternoon in Mississauga against the Steelheads.

• Peterborough vs. Oshawa (7:05 p.m.)
• Sarnia vs. Sault Ste. Marie (7:05 p.m.)
• Windsor vs. Erie (7:05 p.m.)
