OHL Roundup: Greyhounds get help to remain in top spot

Despite having a pair of games postponed due to winter weather across much of southern Ontario, the Ontario Hockey League still had seven games on the schedule on Friday night.

Friday’s postponed games included Windsor at Ottawa, which has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night, and the game in Kingston between the Frontenacs and Belleville Bulls. The game will be rescheduled at a later date.

As for the games that actually were played on Friday night, the Soo Greyhounds got some help after they moved into top spot in the OHL’s West Division on Thursday night. The two teams immediately behind them in the standings – Plymouth and Sarnia – both lost on Friday night. After Friday’s action, the Whalers still hold a game in hand on the Greyhounds while trailing the locals by a single point. Sarnia, meanwhile, trails the Greyhounds by a point as well, but have now played one more game.

In Plymouth, Steven Beyers set up three goals as the Barrie Colts doubled up the Whalers by a 6-3 score. Mark Scheifele, Anthony Camara and Andreas Athanasiou had a goal and an assist each for the Colts. Mitchell Theoret, Josh MacDonald and Zach Hall also scored in the win. Vincent Trocheck scored twice for the Whalers. Gianluca Curcuruto and Sebastian Uvira added two assists each. Ryan Hartman had the other goal in the loss for the Whalers.

In Sarnia, Zach Bratina had a goal and two assists to pace the Saginaw Spirit to a 6-2 win over the Sarnia Sting. Eric Locke added three assists in the win. Jimmy Lodge scored twice while Steven Strong and Nick Moutry had a goal and an assist for Saginaw. Justin Kea set up two goals. Garret Ross also scored in the win. Reid Boucher scored both goals for Sarnia. Charles Sarault and Nikolay Goldobin added two assists each for the Sting.

In Kitchener, Jason Dickinson scored the shootout winner as the Guelph Storm beat the Kitchener Rangers 4-3. Scott Kosmachuk scored twice for the Storm. Patrick Watling also scored for Guelph. Goaltender Garret Sparks stopped 40 shots in the win. Rangers goaltender Joel Vienneau also stopped 40 shots. Tobias Rieder and Ryan Murphy had a goal and an assist each in the loss. Justin Bailey also scored for the Rangers.

In London, Cameron Brace had a goal and two assists as the Owen Sound Attack beat the London Knights 4-3. Steven Janes scored a pair of goals for the Attack. Daniel Catenacci added a goal and an assist. Cody Ceci set up a pair of goals for Owen Sound while Jordan Binnington stopped 38 shots. Seth Griffith had a goal and an assist for London. Max Domi and Alex Broadhurst set up two goals each. Bo Horvat and Josh Anderson had the other goals for London.

In Mississauga, Stuart Percy had a goal and two assists as the Mississauga Steelheads beat the Niagara IceDogs 4-2. Spenser Cobbold scored twice for the Steelheads. Dylan DeMelo had a goal and an assist. Jordan Maletta and Steven Shipley scored for Niagara in the loss.

In Oshawa, Stephen Harper scored a pair of goals as the Erie Otters beat the Oshawa Generals 7-4. J.P. Labardo and Dane Fox had a goal and an assist each in the win. Travis Wood set up two goals. Spencer Abraham, Luke Cairns and Connor McDavid also scored for Erie. Matt Petgrave scored a pair of goals and assisted on another for Oshawa. Scott Laughton also scored twice for Oshawa. Cole Cassels set up two goals in the loss.

In Sudbury, Nick Paul scored the shootout winner as the Brampton Battalion beat the Sudbury Wolves 2-1. Barclay Goodrow scored in regulation for the Battalion. Mathew Campagna scored the lone goal for Sudbury. Goaltender Franky Palazzese stopped 35 shots for the Wolves.
