He later issued an apology before making the settings on his account private.

Monette has beed suspended from "any future OHL officiating assignments" for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

Full details are as follows:

OHL Announces Disciplinary Action

For Immediate Release – Toronto, Ontario

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

The Ontario Hockey League today announced the results of a review of an incident involving OHL referee Joe Monette as it relates to his Twitter message of Friday, January 25th, 2013.

In making the announcement, Commissioner David E. Branch stated “all individuals who are associated with the Ontario Hockey League, either in a management, coaching or officiating position with both Member Teams and the League have been apprised of the League’s Social Networking Policy and understand that there is a responsibility to ensure that at all times we conduct ourselves in a most professional manner.  Mr. Monette displayed extremely poor judgment and the “tweet” not only contravened the League’s Social Networking Policy, but as well was detrimental to the welfare of the League, the officiating staff and fans of the OHL.  The League apologizes to those that may have been offended by such comments”.

As a result of the review, referee Joe Monette has been suspended for any future OHL officiating assignments for the balance of the 2012-13 regular season and playoffs.

Serves him right and hopefully he gets fired.

Glad to see something was actually done about the incident.

He's right.
Saultguy41 1/30/2013 3:16:19 PM Report

I am actually quite surprised that this happened considering that the OHL Commissioner has no love for this city either and would love nothing more than have a OHL without the Greyhounds in it.
SandyB 1/30/2013 3:18:05 PM Report

Doubt this had anything to do with the Soo, Sault.. it was a contravention of OHL policies..
PF92 1/30/2013 3:36:14 PM Report

Joseph Monette will never step foot in Sault Ste Marie again
hockeytime 1/30/2013 3:43:59 PM Report

WOW Thats good to hear This is the second time within a year that the Sault has indured some sort of abuse from individuals that are associated with Windsor Hockey
old-cat33 1/30/2013 3:54:42 PM Report

I think that the penalty was a little stiff but the hell with him for calling us slim pickings. I think that he is referring to the women??
Oldie Goldie 1/30/2013 4:17:14 PM Report

I was surprised that the Chief Referee even scheduled a Windsor Referee to do a game between the Greyhounds and Windsor Spitfires---I hear that both Referees of that game were from Windsor.
That should be a N0-No in any Major League--even if they did a good job it smacks of favoritism to Windsor.
tailerdane 1/30/2013 4:21:29 PM Report

I bet he is no prize, dont bother ever coming back.
Oldie Goldie 1/30/2013 4:23:48 PM Report

Anyone who knows anything about Hockey and watches the Greyhounds regularly can easily see that there are other out-of-town Referees who are not happy being posted to the Soo and it shows in their inconsistent calls.

I attended that game, and after watching his poor officiating,I can say his absence will be appreciated!I'll bet his hometown is proud of him!!
T-rat 1/30/2013 4:33:17 PM Report

Disciplinary action....OK but Branch should have ordered Monette to first come back and referee one more game in the Soo. Let the fans, the subject of his ill-chosen words, voice their personal displeasure. OOOOh, that would have been so poetically justified, and UGLY!!
Tender34 1/30/2013 5:51:24 PM Report

What happened to freedom of speech? Sure he didn't have nice things to say about our city, but I think he should have that right. The right to voice your opinion. I'm sure the fans at that game probably voiced their opinion of his officiating skills.
Sam The Dog 1/30/2013 6:21:22 PM Report

@ TRAT, Love your thinking !

He's just stating fact. I thought it was hilarious
Shortz 1/30/2013 7:17:54 PM Report

Tender34, it wasn't just the comments about the Soo that prompted the suspension, but it also violated the OHL policy regarding posting on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

Not that I go to Soo Greyhound games, but he deserved what he got even though he was right with the one thing he tweeted like (one horse town),got a keep those comments to yourself when your in the public eye.
missmoniepennie 1/30/2013 9:30:54 PM Report

When will people learn that freedom of speech doesn't entitle someone to say whatever they want without a backlash. You have freedom to say what you want but there are consequences for what you say, take responsibility for your words and actions. If you are going to make derogatory comments about someone or a community be prepared to deal with whatever comes your way.

Was he hung or put in jail for speaking? NOPE therefore he was free to say what he did, it just came with consequences he didn't expect.
Norm 1/30/2013 9:39:21 PM Report

The Soo has been noted as a one horse town, also some negative news involving our city in recent years. I think the guy thought he was being funny. I heard a guy on Just For Laughs mention the one tooth thing about Soo people. There is likely way more people who aren`t fans, than are fans in the Soo. Funny or not, a lot of Saultites couldn`t care less about hockey.
eazy d 1/31/2013 6:00:03 AM Report

I agree with him, wholeheartedly. I am actually personally appealing to David Branch to spend a weekend in Sault Ste. Marie and then rethink the penalty. He'll most certainly find that Mr. Monette was just being truthful. #freemonzy

It's hockey for cripes sake...grow some thick skin.
A couple of game suspension would have sufficed.

Politically correct world....producing a bunch of whiny babies.
Jamie333 1/31/2013 2:39:32 PM Report

It really doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with this guy, as a referee officiating in this city, he should have never voiced his opinion of us on the internet for everyone to see. It doesn't make sense that this tweet was a joke between himself and a Sault resident friend. If it had been, it would have been just sent to his buddy and not on twitter for everyone to see. I think he got what he deserved.
