Algoma U Women’s Soccer Gain Exposure at OCAA Invitational
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – January 21, 2013): The Algoma University Thunderbird Women’s Soccer team traveled to Vaughan this past weekend to participate in the Centennial Indoor Soccer Invitational. The tournament was a great opportunity for the Thunderbirds to play different schools from around Ontario in preparation for the provincial championships in March. The tournament was also very beneficial as it gave the team a chance to see the level of competition they will be facing at provincials, how their team matched-up, and what areas they need to improve on moving forward.
Algoma opened the tournament with a 0-0 draw against Fleming College, a team they will be facing at provincials. They then followed with respectable losses to a top-level OUA team York University (4-1) and 2012 OCAA champion Humber College (4-1). Without two of their forwards, the Thunderbirds were forced to play a defensive style and were successful in denying the opposing teams many shooting opportunities.
Thunderbird Assistant Coaches Deandra Franzisi and Aniela Pulice were pleased with their team’s effort against strong competition. “They showed a willingness to compete and not give up. The team gained a lot of spirit and confidence this weekend” said Franzisi.
“A road trip is always a good chance to come together off the field and after last year’s results, the players and coaches noticed a vast improvement and believe they can advance to the later stages of the OCAA provincial playdowns. This tournament was a great boost for our team.” added Pulice.
OCAA Regionals will take place March 5 at Conestoga College, Vaughan. The Thunderbirds are in a pool with Centennial, Seneca, and Fleming. The top two teams will then advance to the OCAA Championship March 21-22.
